The More Things Change…

The more they stay the same right?  Well, yesterday I went to Utah State University to meet Jeremy for lunch.  He is doing some work up there this week and it was fun for me to go back to the campus where I have made so many memories.

The kids and I drove up and parked in the parking garage and I realized that I could have saved money by taking the bus, oh well, next time.  We got there and I walked the paths that I have walked so many times, but this time it was vastly different.  This time, I had a baby in the sling and a 3 year old dragon fighter with me.  As we walked in the door of the Taggart Student Center, I was immediately filled with the sights, sounds and smells of my college days.  We found Jeremy and he looked at me funny.  I guess I had a very reminiscent face.  I went and got food for us, and we sat to eat.  We sat and laughed as we listened to the conversation happening at the table next to us.  4 students, 3 girls, one boy, were chatting about what they were going to do this weekend.  It was just so funny to listen to them, and I started to feel old, very old.

Now, I am not old, I am only 30.  But, the last time I ate in the TSC, I was 23.  There is a big difference between a single 23 year old, and a married, mothered, 30 year old.  A lot has happened in the last 7 years.

I moved out of state.  Met some wonderful friends.  Cemented family relationships.  Fell in love.  Got married.  Had a baby.  Lost said baby.  Moved again, had 2 more babies.  My perspective on so many things has changed since I left USU 7 years ago.  I am more educated now in the ways of childbirth, health and natural family living.  While I still am terrible at Math, I can tell you how and why you should cloth diaper, wear your baby, co-sleep and even offer my opinions about homebirth and vaccinations.  Those were things I had never even thought of before.  But they are part of my daily ramblings now.

I also noticed that I am not the only one that has changed.  Technology has changed so much.  When I was going to school there were few people with laptops.  Everyone had a walkman that they listened to as they studied in the library or ate lunch in the student center.  We had papers and books to read.  The only way you could get on the computer is if you went to the computer lab, and then you had to wait an extremely long time to get on a computer.  All the Macs were always open, no one used Macs then.  Oh and cell phones.  They were a luxury, not a necessity.  I was struck as I watched people eating lunch, listening to their iPod’s, and chatting on their laptops, just how different this world is.  As we said goodbye to Jeremy, we went and got in the car.  But not before I walked around for a bit.  I never realized how many people have cell phones!  I think that probably 90% of the students and faculty I saw walking around on campus were on cell phones.  Just so vastly different from my day.

However, like I said, the more things change, the more they stay the same.  People still dress the same.  You have the students who want to look like they don’t care.  The ones who are so self conscious they walk around trying to look like they fit.  There are the older students who are too busy to care what anyone else thinks, the young freshmen who are just having fun learning about who they are and what they want from live.

It is amazing.  And I am going to be a part of it again soon.  We’ve made the decision that I can go back to school.  I am re-applying and hopefully can get a scholarship for returning women.  It pays to be older and wiser and much more dedicated this time around.

I hope to get my degree in Journalism.  I have always enjoyed writing and reading.  And I figure it is something I can do while still having small children.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.  I am in Logan again, and am going to be going to school.  I can’t wait!

Christmas Knitting

You know, I always set really lofty goals for myself for Christmas knitting and am always really disappointed when I don’t have everything done.  This year is no exception.  I have nothing finished to give to people for Christmas, and I have a lot I want to have finished.  I had really big goals, but I have changed them a bit…possibly more realistic, but only time will tell.

I want to finish S’s Wallaby.  I am making very slow progress on the sleeves…but I think once those are done, it will be pretty simple, I will attach them, do the yoke and the hood and be done.  Hope springs eternal doesn’t it?

I also want to finish J’s socks, but I had to completely rip one of them out while we were on our trip to Kansas.  I realized that they were just going to be way too small and I couldn’t live in that denial any longer.  So, I’ve started over on those.  I guess if I don’t get them done for Christmas, I can always aim for his birthday in February.  I really also want to get his hat done for him too.

I am making some longies for A, and really want to knit a bear for her also.  We’ll see though.

I did finish something on our trip though.  I made the Baby Saartje Bootees for my new niece.  So, that is the picture you will get!  She is 2 weeks old in this photo and is just the sweetest baby.  Yes, it is making me VERY baby hungry.

Here is a photo of her in her cap that I knit for her also.

Oh boy, my uterus aches I want a little one so badly!

We had a great trip.  I will do a post soon of pictures from our vacation.  We ate a lot (I gained 5 lbs!), laughed a lot, and had a generally fantastic time!

Oh, and that blanket baby C is wearing?  SO CUTE!  My mil knit it for her.  It is seed stitch borders around stockinette squares.  I love it!

A Good Read

Have you ever read a book that stuck so strongly with you that you couldn’t stop thinking about it?  Maybe it was a movie you saw, but for me, it’s usually books.  A good book will get to the very core of me, I will think of it for years.  Songs will make me think of the characters and I will be drawn back to that book again and again.

I just finished a book like this.  I read The Time Traveler’s Wife when S was a baby.  It has stuck with me ever since.  Well, on our trip to Kansas for Thanksgiving, I listened to it on my iPod.  I so thoroughly love this story.  I want to be the characters, I am actually a little teary today, no only that my book is done, but because of what happened in the book.  I can’t stop thinking about it.

If you are looking for a good read, something to really make you think, something to touch you so deeply, go out and get this book.  Audrey Niffenegger did a fantastic job with this book.

If I ever have a child named Henry or Clare, it’s because of this book, I love it that much.

So….what are you reading?

In Memoriam

Today I found out that my dear friend, Kerri, lost her son, Orion on November 19.  He was 10 days old and leaves a twin brother and his Mom and Dad.  My heart is aching.  I hurt for her.  Please, hold them in your hearts whenever you think of them.  This is such a terrible tragedy, I know all too well.

F.O. and Sheep Shearing

Ok, we’ll start with my FO – ANOUK!!! This dress has been 2 years in the making and I’ve finally finished it! First, I intended on making it for A when she was a baby, but I didn’t get it done. So, I frogged it and started over in February. I finished yesterday! She won’t let me try it on her yet, but it is SO cute!

Oh don’t you love it?!?!

Ok, now for the sheep shearing. So, the other day, I was reading the Yarn Harlot and S was sitting with me. He was very inspired by this post. He loved looking at the animals, but mostly, he loved the sheep. He loved seeing the fleece for sale. He decided that he wanted to “make a sheep and cut the wool off and go to the store and buy the wool and spin it into yarn”. So, that we did…enjoy the pictures! :)

It’s a Good Day

Today I got a new niece!  I don’t know for sure what her name will be, but she was born around noon, central time.  She weighed in at 7 lbs. 3 oz. and is 19.5 inches long.  I wish I were there with her Momma, but will be next weekend!  Welcome to the world little one!!!

Day 5

And I’m doing really good!  I had a really difficult time on Monday, I really wanted a big hunk of sweet bread, but I resisted and am SO happy I did!  I am feeling better and am LOVING dates!  Oh my gosh, they are so good.  They remind me of the molasses candy my Mom would make at Christmas when I was a kid.  YUMMY!

I have no pictures of knitting today, sorry.  But, I will very soon.  I have all but finished Anouk!  I just need to do the last pocket and sew buttons, pockets and such on.  I think that will be what I do at Knit Night this week.  I will have pictures of the dress and the girlie on Friday, promise! :)
